How to Prepare for Pterygium Surgery

Eye doctor consulting with patient about how to prepare for pterygium surgery

Preparing for pterygium surgery is the first step toward clearer, more comfortable vision. A pterygium is a benign growth on the surface of the eye, often caused by sun and wind exposure. While not life-threatening, it can cause irritation, redness, or blurred vision if left untreated. Surgery is the most effective treatment when symptoms interfere with daily life. With the right preparation, you can help ensure a safe surgery and a smooth recovery.

1–2 Weeks Before Surgery

Dr. Wellish recommends discontinuing aspirin products 7–10 days before surgery if your doctor agrees it is safe. Do not stop taking blood thinners such as Coumadin or Plavix unless specifically instructed by your surgeon. Stopping certain medications without medical approval may increase your risk of other complications, so always confirm with your prescribing doctor before making changes.

3 Days Before Surgery

About three days before your procedure, you should discontinue using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, Naproxen, or Vioxx. These drugs can increase bleeding risk during surgery. Make sure to confirm your operative date and time if you haven’t heard from your eye doctor or clinic manager.

It is also important to make transportation arrangements at this time. You will need a driver to bring you to and from the surgery center and your first post-operative appointment. Dr. Wellish also advises filling your prescribed eye drops, typically Pred Forte and Vigamox, so they are ready for use immediately after your procedure.

Day Before Surgery

On the day before surgery, take a bath or shower and carefully cleanse your face and eyelids. Use all prescribed medications and eye drops as directed. Remember, you will need to fast for 8 hours before arriving at the surgery center, which means no food or drink after midnight if your surgery is scheduled in the morning.

Morning of Surgery

The morning of your surgery, it’s essential to follow these final steps for safety and comfort:

  • Do not eat or drink anything before surgery.
  • Avoid makeup, jewelry, and valuables when coming to the center.
  • Bring your insurance card and photo identification with you.
  • If you take blood pressure medication, you may take your dose with a small sip of water.
  • If you are diabetic:
    • Do not take your oral diabetes medications.
    • If you use insulin, take half the usual dose of your long-acting insulin and do not take your short-acting insulin. Bring your insulin bottles with you to the surgery center.

Following these instructions closely reduces the risk of complications and ensures the best possible recovery. According to the National Eye Institute, preparation and adherence to pre- and post-surgical instructions significantly improve healing outcomes and long-term eye health.
