Clinical Expertise

Dr. Kostanyan specializes in the medical, laser, and surgical management of glaucoma and is among the few fellowship-trained glaucoma surgeons in the region. He offers both traditional procedures and minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS), providing individualized surgical plans tailored to each patient’s needs. In addition, he delivers comprehensive cataract care, including standard, complex (traumatic or inflammatory), and premium refractive cataract surgeries. His expertise extends to advanced vision correction options, including EVO ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens), laser-assisted astigmatism correction, Toric, Multifocal, Extended-Depth-of-Focus, and Light Adjustable Lenses, as well as secondary intraocular lens placement.

Education and Medical Training

Dr. Kostanyan was born in Armenia and graduated with honors from the Medical University at the age of 21. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Malayan Eye Center in Armenia, where he also partnered with the Armenian Eye Care Project to deliver free medical and surgical eye care in underserved communities. After moving to the United States, he joined the Ophthalmic Imaging Research Laboratory and collaborated with renowned glaucoma specialist Dr. Joel Schuman MD, a co-inventor of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Dr. Kostanyan went on to complete a second ophthalmology residency, followed by a prestigious glaucoma and anterior segment fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Personal Interests

Dr. Kostanyan has lived in various parts of the U.S., including California, New York, New Mexico, and Pittsburgh. He is fluent in Armenian and Russian, and is working on refreshing his French and learning Spanish. Outside of his professional work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, traveling, playing table tennis and pool, and watching stand-up comedy and movies.
