At Wellish Abrams Vision Institute in Las Vegas and Henderson, your initial consultation with a refractive counselor takes about 1 hour. It includes testing and a discussion of candidacy, the surgery process, pricing, and scheduling. Your eyes will not be dilated at this appointment.
How to Prepare for Your Consultation
You do not need to stop wearing contact lenses before your initial consultation. However, please wear your glasses or bring them with you so the team can measure your current prescription.
Bring any questions you have about vision correction, including what you hope to achieve and any concerns about surgery, recovery, or cost.
What Happens During the Consultation?
Vision Testing and Measurements
Your consultation includes testing with iTrace and Pentacam, along with measurements of your glasses. These tests provide information that helps the team discuss your vision correction options.
Some patients may need additional corneal mapping to check for irregularities, including possible keratoconus. The team may also use autorefraction to estimate your prescription, particularly if you do not bring glasses.
Reviewing Your Vision Correction Options
After testing, your refractive counselor reviews the results and discusses your potential candidacy for vision correction.
The consultation helps you understand the available options and what further evaluation is needed before surgery.
Understanding the Process and Asking Questions
Your counselor explains the surgery process, discusses scheduling, and answers your questions. You will receive information about your proposed procedure so you can review the details at home.
You can use this time to ask about preparation, recovery, follow-up care, and what results to expect. The goal is to help you feel informed and comfortable with your decision.
Will You Meet the Doctor or Surgeon?
Patients typically do not meet a doctor at the initial consultation. Your initial appointment is with the refractive counselor.
If you move forward with a vision correction option, you will meet Dr. McCandless at your pre-op exam. Patients typically meet their surgeon on the day of surgery.
The consultation, pre-op exam, and surgery are separate steps in the process.
Cost of Consultation

Your counselor will explain the costs associated with moving forward, including any applicable deposits, additional services, and optional programs.
How Are Pricing and Payment Options Explained?
During your consultation, you will receive a detailed written pricing sheet for your proposed refractive surgery. Your counselor reviews:

- The deposit is due at your pre-op exam
- Accepted forms of payment

- Any applicable monovision contact lens trial fee
- The optional Vision for Life Plan

What Is the Vision for Life Plan?
The Vision for Life Plan is an optional program available to eligible LASIK and PRK patients. Your counselor explains the plan during the consultation, and information about it appears on your written pricing sheet.
You can choose to add the plan up until the day of surgery. Ask your counselor to explain its current cost, terms, and coverage so you understand what it includes.
What Is a Monovision Contact Lens Trial?
For some people with presbyopia, the age-related loss of near-focusing ability, a monovision contact lens trial may help them explore their vision correction options. Monovision uses one eye for distance vision and the other for near vision.
The trial lets you experience this arrangement before surgery and helps assess whether you can adapt to it. Your counselor will explain whether a trial applies to your situation and review its fee.
This trial is separate from PRK recovery and is not a treatment used during PRK healing.
What Happens If You Decide to Move Forward?
Your refractive counselor will schedule your pre-op exam and surgery. You will also receive a “Preparing for Pre Op form“ with preparation instructions and restrictions to follow after surgery.
If you wear contact lenses, the team will give you a specific date to stop wearing them before your pre-op exam. This is different from the initial consultation, which does not require you to stop contacts beforehand.
The team’s stated contact lens preparation periods before pre-op are:
- Soft contact lenses: stop wearing them two weeks before pre-op.
- Toric contact lenses: stop wearing them three weeks before pre-op.
- Hard contact lenses: stop wearing them for one month for each decade of wear before pre-op.
